4) You will need to have on hand trustworthy plumber tape, small gas torch, solder, flux, plumbing sandpaper, pipe cutter, gas tape (to seal gas line) and maybe some pipe glue. Ask the sales person at the hardware store for a more defined list.
Turn off the water to the water line repair heater or if the valve is not working turn off the water to the house. If the valve is not working it will need to be replaced. In a future article we will discuss how to replace your valve.
One other common design that is considered "washerless" was made famous by Delta and copied by several other makers. It uses little "cup" seals that fit over springs recessed in the back of the valve body. The springs press these "seals" against the cartridge and regulate the flow through little tapered openings in the cartridge. If you have one of these and it's dripping, changing these springs and seals will usually correct it. Here's a tip. Once you have the cartridge out of the way, insert a phillips screwdriver into the seal and pop both the seal and spring out. Stick the new ones on the end of the screwdriver to help guide them into place. This is especially helpful if you don't have long slender fingers.
Once you have disconnected the tank remove it from your work space. Do a thorough measurement of the remaining pipe for reference when you go to the hardware store. I will be honest with you, you might need to make a few trips back to the store. Once you get the new tank, slide it into place to line up the plumbing.
One tip is to avoid hiring a plumber, who is a part or who is representing a company. They usually work on a commission basis. The company usually has a flat rate for every plumbing service and the plumber's commission will be added up to the company's charge. This is one of the main reasons why some plumbers charge you with a ridiculously high amount of money for their services. Opt for freelance water line repair plumbers instead. They work for themselves, so the price is usually negotiable.
The key to finding local businesses when doing an online search is to include your zip code in the query, such as, "plumber 72764". This will tell Google or bing that you want results from that geographic location!
Is your garbage disposal clogged, but it is turning ok? This may be due to a blockage in the pipe. If you look at the pipe work under your sink you will see that the disposal is connected to a pipe that should join to a U bend and providing it was installed correctly it should have a connector that can be undone. If you undo this connector the pipe will pull away and generally this is where most blockages occur. Remove the blockage and reconnect the pipe.
